Traditional ethnography may use videos or images, but digital ethnography goes more in-depth. For example, digital ethnographers would use social media platforms such as Twitter or blogs so that people's interactions and behaviors can be studied. Ethnography as a practice is rooted in place, in immersing oneself in the unique and particular contexts of individuals to better understand their perceptions and world views. Ethnographic research can produce rich, descriptive qualitative data that paints a holistic picture of a person – where they live, how they interact with their spaces and with others, and what matters most to them. Digital ethnography is central to our understanding of the social world; it can shape methodology and methods, and provides the technological tools needed to research society.
By researching from the ground up we bring fresh insight to a constantly changing world. In addition to visual, literary, and multimedia ethnography, digital ethnography takes a cue from hypertext theory and digital heritage work in the humanities and virtual heritage studies. For example, Murray's now classic discussion of the characteristics of digital environments in relation to storytelling offers ethnographers myriad ideas for developing innovative new media projects. The hands-on part of digital ethnography should thereby provide examples of tools (for instance screen recording, digital diaries, etc.). Here, I find particularly important to strive for lowering the threshold when it comes to the technology, to not focus on the instrumental but … Digital ethnography has emerged as the dominant label for a set of qualitative techniques developed over the last twenty-odd years that aim at rich, contextualized accounts of stuff that goes on online.
